Keep the smiles going
Today’s kids have busy schedules With over 30 years of experience I offer engaging creative piano lessons
Through my many years as a piano teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how much is expected of children. School demands are higher, standardized testing is common, and many students juggle multiple extracurricular activities all while trying to find time for homework, family, and play. It’s simply the reality of modern life.
Because of this, it’s not uncommon for a student to arrive at their piano lesson feeling tired or overwhelmed. When that happens, it’s my responsibility to meet them where they are to make their lesson engaging, enjoyable, and productive, without adding to their stress.
Creativity Makes the Difference
Creativity plays a vital role in my teaching, especially with younger students. If I notice a child’s attention beginning to drift, I’ll often suggest trying something different. Almost instantly, their curiosity is sparked.
For example, if a student is struggling with rhythm or timing, I may bring out drumsticks and a practice pad and have them tap out the tempo while counting the beats aloud. Sometimes I’ll even play along while they drum. This simple change keeps learning fun, reinforces musical fundamentals, and re-energizes the lesson.
If a student is finding note values or rests confusing a very common stage when learning to read music I avoid pressure or repetition that can lead to frustration. Instead, I may set the music aside and suggest reviewing with flashcards. The response is almost always enthusiastic. The learning continues, stress disappears, and students often ask to include flashcards again in future lessons. Laughter, smiles, and high-fives are all part of the process.
Practice Happens and That’s Okay
“I didn’t really get a chance to practice this week.”
Every piano teacher hears this, and I’m no exception. One of the first rules I establish with my students is simple: I don’t get angry. Life gets busy, and some weeks are harder than others. If a student hasn’t practiced, we simply pick up where we left off and move forward together. Most often, by the next lesson, things are back on track.
Every Lesson Begins with Connection
It’s important to me to understand how my students are doing not just musically, but personally. I always ask about their day or their week. The answers vary widely: some students arrive full of excitement, others may be carrying the weight of a tough day at school.
These conversations help shape each lesson. They provide the foundation for an approach that is thoughtful, responsive, and encouraging ensuring that piano lessons remain a positive, supportive space where students can grow both musically and emotionally.
